Sydney Art School continues to grow and we are always on the lookout for great tutors.

We currently have opportunities for:

Tutors and Assistant Tutors to teach art classes to school age students starting from Term 1 in 2024

Senior Tutors, Trainers and Assessors to deliver classes as part of the Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications.

What is the Job Profile for a Tutor & Assistant Tutor?

On a week-by-week basis you will deliver art classes to students based on a structured set of lesson plans leading to each student completing a major work.  Each term the lessons will centre on drawing and painting and include exploration of other media types.  You will also converse with parents, and collaborate with other staff members at the school.

If you start as an assistant tutor you will be given the opportunity to shadow a senior tutor to learn first hand how we deliver our classes at the School.

Shift days available: Weekday afternoons/evenings & Saturdays
Studio Locations: Hornsby, Baulkham Hills, Epping
Student age range: 5 to 15
Pay Range: $25 – $40+ per hour
Typical Class Duration: 1.5 hours (minimum 3-hour shift)
Weekly hours: Ranging from 4 up to 24 hours

What are the qualities we are looking for in Tutors?

Experience in art and/or education. You will need skills in painting and drawing that may have been gained in HSC art or other courses in the Visual Arts. Formal qualifications or enrolment in related undergraduate level courses are well regarded.

You will need to be friendly and a good communicator. As well as delivering weekly classes it will be important that you talk with students and parents to understand their personal goals and identify areas for improvement.

Fluency in English is essential, but the ability to speak another language is a benefit as the school attracts students from a wide variety of cultures.

Punctuality and reliability are essential. Students and parents expect classes to start and finish on time.

Being organised but flexible is important. Week by week you will work through a structured set of lesson plans and can adapt your approach based on the ability of your students and the personal knowledge and skills you bring to the table.

What is the Job Profile for a Senior Tutor, Trainer & Assessor?

Senior tutors deliver art classes to develop technical skills in students from beginner through to intermediate & advanced levels.  Classes will focus on one specific area within the disciplines of drawing, painting, printmaking and jewellery making.

Shift days available: Weekdays,  Evenings & Saturdays
Studio Locations: Hornsby, Baulkham Hills
Student age range: 16+ through to adults
Pay Range: $35 – $45+ per hour
Typical Class Duration: 2 hours (minimum 3-hour shift)
Weekly hours: Ranging from 4 to 24 hours

What are the qualities & qualifications we are looking for in Senior Tutors, Trainers & Assessors?

In addition to the qualities we look for in a tutor ...

  • You will have a high level of skill and industry experience in at least one of the artistic disciplines that are taught at the school.  You should be able to show experience in group or solo exhibitions or have been a finalist in a recognised art prizes in Australia or overseas.
  • Industry experience as an artist or art educator is essential.  Tertiary qualifications in visual arts are well regarded.
  • To be a Trainer & Assessor you will need to hold a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (TAE40116) or a Diploma or higher level qualification in Adult Education
