Each term, we develop a set of lesson plans based on a new topic to keep your child engaged.
The term topic supports learning of techniques and artistic styles presented in the context of an art movement or famous artist Introducing a fresh topic each term enhances student interest and engagement, accelerating the learning process.
The Topic for Term 3 2025 is Fauvism.
This term, children will embark on a vibrant journey into the bold and expressive world of Fauvism, a revolutionary art movement that turned tradition on its head in the early 20th century.
A Colour Revolution:
Fauvism—named after the French word “les fauves” meaning “the wild beasts”—was led by artists like Henri Matisse, André Derain, and Maurice de Vlaminck, who shocked the art world with their use of wild, non-naturalistic colours, simplified shapes, and emotional energy. These artists broke free from the rules of realism to explore how colour could express feeling, not just describe what we see.
What Kids Will Learn:
Students will discover how the Fauves painted portraits, landscapes, and still lifes using unexpected colours, dynamic brushwork, and expressive shapes. They will examine how these artists turned everyday scenes into bold, joyful, and sometimes chaotic compositions that celebrated creativity and individuality.
Through hands-on projects, children will:
-
Study key works by Fauvist artists and understand their creative intentions
-
Explore how colour choices affect mood and meaning
-
Develop their own expressive art using drawing, painting, collage, and mixed media
