Essential Painting Techniques

In this art course you will work through painting projects inspired by the artworks of the old master painters.  Students will explore painting techniques includeing impasto, alla prima, glazing and scumbling. 

Classes are accompanied by painting demonstrations, analysis of Old Master paintings and discussions of technical art history studies (the study of artist’s techniques and materials).

Foundational aspects of painting taught will include

• tonality,
• composition,
• colour and texture,
• the characteristics of oil painting materials and tools.

Techniques explored include

• impasto,
• alla prima,
• sfumato,
• dry brushing,
• glazing,
• scumbling.
