WELCOME TO TERM 4 2016 at SYDNEY ART SCHOOL

The term topic is "Illustrators and Animators"

This is going to be an incredible term with a lot of ground to cover, and something to capture the imagination of every student.

In addition we will also be working towards creating an entry for 2 great art competitions.  (More about this later)

The Dark Knight Returns - Frank Miller


Skills and Techniques

Students will expand upon the traditional skills from earlier terms to create stylized artistic interpretations.

We will explore various techniques used in illustration art including Japanese drawing and animation styles including proportions for faces and bodies. 

Techniques used in creating storyboards will be introduced to the older students.  This will also include how to use cinematic techniques such as zoom in shots, wide angle, and birds eye view/worrms eye view  in drawings and paintings.

Inspiration will be drawn from a diverse range of artists, including ...

Hayao Miyazaki:  Animation Artist, Cofounder of Studio Ghibli works included Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle.

Frank Miller: Comic artist for DC and Marvel Comics including The Dark Knight

Maurice Sendak: American illustrator of children's books including Where the Wild Things Are.

Takashi Tezuka: Games artist for Nintendo including Legend of Zelda and Super Mario.

Justin Hillgrove:  Contemporary American illustrator of books, magazines, card games and toys.

Wombat Books Illustration Challenge 2017
Wombat Books Illustration Challenge 2017

The Challenge has been established in order to provide aspiring young illustrators with the opportunity to be published in a professionally produced children's book and gain an introduction into the world of illustrating.

Winning illustrations will be published in the book titled Yay! It's Library Day which is due for release in 2018. Illustrators will receive two free copies of the book and a $50 voucher to spend at Wombat Books on other titles.
