Course Description
With the guidance of Joe De La Hoyde (Winner Hornsby Art Prize – Digital Art/Stills/Photography Category) you will learn essential professional skills in photo imaging through this practical 8-week photography course.
Designed for aspiring photographers, digital imaging students, and creative practitioners, you’ll develop the technical and conceptual abilities to plan, capture, process, enhance, and output high-quality photographic images suitable for publication, display, exhibition, or professional portfolios.
Through hands-on studio and location shoots, guided editing sessions, and project-based learning, master key industry techniques including
- image composition and capture,
- using depth of field creatively
- working with light,
- digital post-processing & editing,
- colour management,
- camera operation & the exposure triangle.
Explore visual communication principles to create impactful images that showcase your artwork respond to briefs, convey narratives, and meet professional standards.
No advanced photography experience required—just a keen interest in developing your technical and creative photo imaging skills! You’ll complete the course with a series of resolved, professional-standard images ready for real-world application.

This photography course supports students who are working towards a qualification in the following elective units.
Students who complete a Diploma of Visual Arts will also be awarded with a Specialisation in Photography by completing the units marked in the table below. The specialisation will be listed in the students Testamur.
