Art Therapy at Sydney Art School

Art therapy is a form of expressive therapy that uses art materials, such as paints, chalk and markers and is based on the principle that the creative process of art is both healing and life-enhancing.

Through the creative process people may find improved work or social outcomes through;

  • increasing insight and judgment,
  • coping better with stress,
  • working through emotional trauma,
  • reducing depression or anxiety,
  • increasing cognitive abilities,
  • improving relationships with family and friends,
  • enjoying the pleasures of the creative experience.
Our art therapy programmes are prepared and run by tertiary qualifed staff and are tailored to the needs of the group or individual clients.
Our clients include Aged Care Facilities and Community Care Organisations.  Depending on the needs of the group involved we can provide sessions for;

traditional art classes
art therapy
jewellery making & design, and
craft

These activities have the benefit of being enjoyable but at the same time they exercise cognitive design skills and fine motor skills.   Some students develop an ongoing recreational interest in art or jewellery outside of the group sessions and this can in turn assist in integration into society or the workforce.

Aged Care & Retirement Facilities
For aged care facilities we provide on-site services including trained staff to run either traditional art classes or structured art therapy sessions.  If required materials needed for basic participation can also be provided.  We have found these to be a popular activity as artistic talent is not something that deteriorates with age.  Our Baulkham Hills studio may be available to host art groups depending on availability.  Bookings are essential.

Community Care Organisations
We also provide on-site services to Community Care Organisations.  These are often required to provide support to carers of people with either physical or mental disabilities.   In these cases a customised program is required.  However,  we can quickly and easily by combine a set of proven art or craft modules into a program tailored to the needs and developmental stage of the client group.
